Avery Nixon, R.M.

My fascination with birth began as a curious young child growing up in rural Alberta. Every spring our cattle would have their babies and seeing this instilled in me that birth is a natural, normal process. Although the fascination only grew from there, it took some time for midwifery to find me.

After finishing a Bachelor of Science in Neuroscience at Dalhousie University in Halifax, I had a period of uncertainty about where I wanted to go and what I wanted to do. One fateful day I was listening to the radio and a story about the new MRU midwifery program came on. That was my light bulb moment. I started reading about midwifery, and the rest is history. I could not have imagined a better path for myself.

Pregnancy and birth is such a transformative experience in a person’s life, and I am constantly amazed by the power and strength of pregnant people as they journey into parenthood. It is a privilege to provide support as little ones are welcomed into the world and to help families through these important transitions.

When I’m not working, you will find me spending time with family and friends, hiking, travelling, knitting, or making soap.
